716 Mix – Gaël Segalen : Le Rythme W

17.10.17 - Guillaume - 716lavie

Gaël Segalen hasn’t started to work in the cultural field yesterday,

her approach of music and sounds is indeed extremely diverse : from social sciences, to radio, to on location sound for film, to field recording, to electroacoustic studies and work, to education, to travel the world to collect voices, to audio art / interaction / anthropology and geology, to music composition… Gaël is an artist, a researcher, a feminist activist, in one word : an observer, a listener. She is also very prolific so it will be hard to resume everything here.

Under the alias IhearU,

she focuses on dissonance and new music, as well as create people’s encounter in improvisation spaces. Check her tape “Memoir of my Manor” out in june 2017, a collection of improvised music between 2015 and 2017, a great piece of scary/not scary manor psychedelic music, just like an inoffensive ghost.

With Erik Douglas Porter (Afrikan Sciences), she forms Les Graciés,

building “polyrhythmic, hypnotic groove and experimental beats free of tempo and meter. This 3 tracks was produced in 2012-2013 but self-released in august 2017. They had previously released the full album Low Doses for Firecracker recordings, the label of Lindsay Todd aka House of Traps whom I proposed a couple of times to do a mix for 716lavie.

her involvement for a better recognition of women in general

and women’s work as artists, especially into the experimental music field through the Polyphones project, that has its own radio show “Event Horizon” on LYL radio. “Polyphones is a space of visibility created for women in the field of sonic and musical experimentation. This is a network born out of the reality of the Parisian scene with national and international offshoots. Polyphones aims to promote an artistic practice, through concrete actions, such as organising concerts, events, workshops, skill sharing, pooling resources and promoting independent labels and micropublications..”

Her mix, Le Rythme W,

was initially played live in the radio show Event Horizon the 6th july 2017. It’s a selection of percussions, ambient, space music, electroacoustic, industrial and sound ecology, cause Gaël’s goal is to reveal the rhythms of the world, included in every sound, in order to create a complex and polyrhythmic music. She thought about this common point : the coded rhythm W (W for women) because all the tracks are made by women except the last one that is a tribute to Pierre Henry who had passed away the night before.
