Fabian Altahonea Romero is from Barranquilla, costa atlantica de Colombia and runs the Africolombia blog (chech its youtube channel too).
His parents used to have a pico (colombian mobile sound system) so he’s been playing with african vinyles since he was a baby. Be sure not to miss his crazy pictures of famous picos on his blog !
In Barrio Kennedy, the neighbourhood in south Barranquilla where he is from, they used to organize verbenas (outside popular parties) during the carnival season. So from the late 70’s to the early 90’s, he saw every year this parade of the greatest picos passing in front of his house. This strongly influenced him and gave him his passion for that culture. When he was a child, his favourite one was “El Rojo The Cobra Barranquilla”. There are even 2 facebook groupes for that pico called “Quien no bailo con El Rojo La Cobra De Barranquilla” and Rojo Mix La Cobra Barranquilla.
Fabian’s dream is to go to Africa and I really hope it will happen one day. Honestly I’m sure it will as it’s always been his deepest wish.
But before that, there is the Barranquilla carnaval coming soon : from the 5th to the 8th of March. And he’ll be there !, welcoming dj’s from all over the world and also the Lulacruza band and Vincent Moon who’re shooting their film about colombian musical culture in Colombia !
