Sigulda (Latvia)

Sigulda is the city with the most tourism out of all the cities I visited in Latvia. I arrived there tired, under the rain, and I left the next morning. I therefore didn’t get the chance to really dig deeper than the places that are already well known. However, it’s a pretty city, known as much for its castle than it’s tobogganing run.

It’s the only hotel that asked for an article in exchange for a free night. The hotel is in a good location, and the breakfast isn’t bad, but I thought that the price for the room under the roof was too high (about 60 euros), especially since the door didn’t close well, and it slammed close.

The toboggan and bobsleigh run
It’s known world-wide. The National Russian team was in my hotel. As I write these lines, the world championships just happened, and it’s the Russian Semen Pavlichenko that won the gold on February 16th, 2015. Maybe he was one of the happy owner of these shoes in the hallway that led to my room. I was the only client on that floor that wasn’t part of that team, so it was a real treat smelling all those feet when I had to reach my room.
Cable Car
You can also cross and fly over the valley and the Gauja River with the cable car, but it was closed the day I was there, because of winds and rain.

Fazenda is a quality restaurant chain in Latvia, the ingredients are good, the dishes aren’t perfect, but the service and the atmosphere is nice.

Excellent coffee shop, in front of the train station. Warning, it’s always full. I tried the salad, the burger, the fruit juice, the mini-pizza, everything was homemade and delicious.
