716 Exclusive Mix – Flemming Dalum : The Sound Of Belgium

Flemming Dalum est une légende vivante donc comme toutes les légendes on ne sait plus bien par où commencer; surtout qu’il est très productif et donc beaucoup de blogs ou de sites se sont déjà collés à l’exercice. Je vous conseille particulièrement la fantastique interview réalisée par Icrates.
Je vais pourtant m’y atteler car son histoire est passionnante.

Flemming Dalum is a living legend so it is complicated to introduce him as it is for all legends; above all he is still very productive so many websites and blogs have already done the job. Let’s mention the terrific interview on Icrates.
However I’m going to do my best because his life is simply fascinating.

Ce danois quinqua est tombé dans l’italo disco grâce au titre “Chinese Revenge” de Kyoto.
S’ensuit alors une passion dévorante qui le conduira en Italie pour aller chercher la crème de l’italo à la source même soit directement chez les distributeurs dont les plus connus sont Il discotto et Disco magic.
Cette photo de lui en 1985 est sans doute l’un des plus célèbres. Des collectionneurs d’italo ont failli avoir une attaque en la découvrant car personne ne soupçonnait l’existence d’une fourgonnette de livraison “Il Discotto”, un fantasme total.

This Danish dj fell in love with italo disco with the track “Chinese Revenge” from Kyoto.
This absolute passion will drive him straight to Italy to dig the crème of italo straight at the source which means the Italian distributors of italo from that time such as Il discotto & Disco magic.
This picture below of Flemming in 1985 is probably one of his most famous. Italo collectors barely had an heart attack when they first saw it cause none of them had ever suspected the existence of the Il Discotto delivery car.

Il se met rapidement à mixer à l’aide de deux platines et enregistre ses mixes sur un magnétocassette avec une touche “pause” manuelle : grâce la touche pause il peut faire une pause dans l’enregistrement, changer de disque puis continuer d’enregistrer en repartant exactement sur le beat. Ceci ne fut plus possible avec l’arrivée des nouveaux lecteurs-enregistreurs car leur fonction pause était digitale et créait ainsi un délai d’1/10ème de seconde.
Il concocte ainsi ses propres édits bien avant les logiciels audios et il acquiert son surnom de “King of the Cut” qui ne le lâchera jamais.
Voici un mix de 1985 qui vous donnera une idée du résultat.

He quickly started to record on a tape recorder his mixes made with 2 turntables and an echo machine : “I recorded this mix on an old cassettetapedeck with a manual pause function – which gave me possibility to stop / pause the recording exactly on a beat !… then change the records and continue the recording. This was done many many times in this mix
This was not possible on newer cassettetapedecks – because they came with electronic pause function which gave approx. 1/10 of a second in delay…”

Sur la photo ci-dessous on le voit à la sortie de la discothèque italienne dans laquelle il a eu la chance de réaliser un mix de 45 minutes en 1984.

La chance qu’il a eue c’est de travailleur jeune tout en étant logé chez ses parents ce qui lui a permis de financer ses 11 voyages en Italie de 1983 à 1986 et l’achat massif de disques.
Ses parents étaient très tolérants avec lui puisqu’il jouait de la musique fort en permanence dans sa chambre. Ses parents jouent d’ailleurs tous les deux d’un instrument, sa mère joue d’ailleurs encore chaque dimanche à l’église.
J’ai suggéré à Flemming de créer l’Italo Disco Evangéliste mais il n’était pas sûr sur ce coup-là 🙂

Il n’a pas arrêté de travailler à partir de 1977 : employé d’une station service, professeur de badminton, livreur de journaux, il travaillait même durant ses voyages, si bien qu’il avait toujours suffisamment d’argent pour continuer d’acheter des disques.  Pour l’anecdote, il est devenu un joueur confirmé de badminton et a joué contre des grands joueurs danois de l’époque : Morten Frost, Poul Erik Høyer, Flemming Delfs and Svend Pri.

He had the chance to work at an early age while still living at his parents house : so he could afford to finance his trips to Italy and his massive purchases of records.
His parents were very tolerant and let him play the music super loud in his room. They both play music and her mother still plays at the church every sunday.
I suggested to Flemming that he should create the “Christian Italo” style but he was not so sure about that:)))

He didn’t stop working since 1977 :
“I worked with different jobs from 1977 forward to my italo trips which started in 1983 at a gas station – also worked as a Badminton instructor… I also had others jobs as a Young kid, delivering news papers etc… so basically I had been working for many years and saved money for the trips…. during the trips I also worked… so the Money never stopped and I could continue to buy records.

C’est comme ça qu’il a constitué ce qui est considéré comme sans doute la collection la plus complète au monde d’italo disco.

That’s how he built one of the worlds most complete collections of Italo and Disco.

Il a ensuite persuadé le propriétaire d’un magasin de blues au Danemark d’importer des disques d’italo en lui assurant que lui et ses amis fans d’italo lui achèteraient les disques. A sa surprise, le mec a acquiescé et c’était parti : cela lui a permis de continuer à sa fournir depuis Copenhague.
Il faut préciser quelque chose ici : maintenant que l’italo est connue, on pourrait croire qu’il était facile de repérer les disques à acheter à l’époque, détrompez-vous. Il est vrai que Flemming avait coutume d’acheter TOUS les disques mais une anecdote illustre son flaire.
Par exemple le disquaire de blues avait une quantité astronomique du “Eyes of Glass” d’East Wall mais personne ne voulait l’acheter : 25 ans plus tard c’est un must have. Flemming a remarqué ce même phénomène pour beaucoup d’autres références d’italo.

Then he persuaded the owner of a Danish record store specialized in blues to import italo disco : he did ensure the guy that him and all his italo friends would buy him the records. Surprisingly the guy accepted and that allowed Flemming to continue to buy the newest italo records.
Let’s precise something : now that italo became so famous, one could think it was easy to identify at the time the good italo records, the ones that would mark the history : not at all. It is true that Flemming used to buy ALL the records but still; about the track “Eyes Of Glass” by East Walls for example : “the blues shop had sooooo many copies and no one wanted to buy it… people weren’t interested in it. Now 25 years after a lot of people are looking for this record…. funny to observe! I noticed the same situation regarding a number of other Italo records.” 

Il a une formation d’ingénieur en électronique et après avoir travaillé comme coach en communication, il est aujourd’hui conseiller en réinsertion
Il continue de réaliser des mixes pour des blogs ou des sites, plus que jamais d’ailleurs, parfois jusqu’à un mix par semaine.
A côté de ça il produit et remixe dans son studio. Il adore jouer des synthés et bidouiller dans le studio de son pote Steeve Gjerulff (cf. photo) avec lequel il a fait beaucoup de remixes.
De 1980 à 1982 il a d’ailleurs été clavier dans un groupe, il jouait sur un Korg Polysix (d’où le nom en forme de jeu de mots de l’artiste “Polysick“) et un synthétiseur Arp.

Flemming is educated as an Electronic engineer and later worked as a coach in communication. Today he helps people to get a job.
He still does mixes for blogs and websites, more than ever!, sometimes one a week.
Beside that, he produces and does remixes in his own studio. 
“I have my own mini studio on my computer … so I love to be in Steen Gjerulff‘s studio and play with the synths…. I played in a band back in 1980 to 1982 and I was the keyboard player…. I had a Korg Polysix and an Arp synth.”

Revenons-en au mix. Je voulais proposer un mix à Flemming depuis longtemps mais j’avais envie de lui proposer quelque chose de différent. Nous en avons parlé la 1ère fois en mars 2013. Flemming a rapidement eu cette idée d’un mix plus dark, il a énormément travaillé dessus, il y a des tonnes d’édits en tous genres spécialement faits pour cette session, voilà pourquoi il voit le jour en janvier 2014.

Pourquoi avoir choisi de jour ce son belge?
Lorsque l’italo a perdu de son intérêt en 1986 car devenue trop commerciale, Flemming s’est intéressé au new beat naissant et s’est mis là encore à acheter TOUS les disques de new beat qui sortaient. Puis à la mort du new beat, les belges se sont mix à accélérer le tempo et c’est devenu le hard beat puis ce furent les débuts de la techno européenne qu’il adore littéralement. Il considère qu’il a 99% de tous les disques des débuts de la techno européenne!

Pourquoi ce titre “The Sound Of Belgium”?
Le titre “The Sound Of Belgium” lui est apparu évident car beaucoup de ses amis belges lui parlent depuis un moment de l’énorme retour de ce style musical. Certains ont d’ailleurs réalisé une compilation nommée “The Sound Of Belgium“. Il a donc pensé judicieux d’utiliser le même titre pour son mix.
C’est pour lui “un thème très fort… réunir tous les courants des débuts de la techno belge : depuis la naissance du new beat et jusqu’à ce qu’il devienne la techno européenne.”

Back to the mix. I wanted to propose a mix to Flemming but something different. We first talked about it in march 2013. 
Flemming quickly came back with the the idea of a darker mix. He worked A LOT, there are tons of edits especially made for this session, that’s why it’s only online in January 2014.

Why did he decide to play this Belgian sound?
“After italo faded away for me in 1986, became to Commercial and lost the magic, I moved to new beat and I have ALL new beat records ever released. After new beat died the belgian’s raised tempo and it became hard beat, Skizzo and eventually early European techno which I also loooove…. and I really got 99% of all early European techno records !!!!!!

Why did he choose the name “The Sound Of Belgium”?
“Just came to me because a lot of my friends from Belgium are telling me about a huge second wave of this musical genre right now!!!!!!…. and some friends have just released a compilation called “The Sound Of Belgium“…. so i thought it would be smart to pick the same title/name hehe
I believe it’s a strong concept mix…. strong theme….. all belgian early techno style from when the new beat rised up in tempo and became European techno.”
