OEJ Mixtape XII – Ursa’s Reef plays Portuguese Trance

Ursa’s Reef is the alias of an anonymous artist hailing from from Sintra, Portugal, with a few productions coming up on One Eyed Jacks – you might remember him for his edit of Violet’s “Miami”, one of the “Best Dance Tracks of 2013” according to SPIN magazine ( http://ift.tt/1fxDJBY ).

This reserved fella cites Bryan Ferry (with or without Roxy Music) and early 90’s Trance as his main influences and, actually, these two seemingly opposite forces explain a lot of the creative ambiance that surrounds Ursa’s Reef; Rave intensity, emotion, romance, a fascination with his hometown of Sintra, an appetite for mystery, curiosity for tragic stories and a romanticization of lost innocence, abyss and decay.

It has been quite an adventure to be in touch with this thrilling new member of OEJ, and to celebrate that I’ve invited the man to dig deep into some of his favorite music: Portuguese Trance. Despite a few new bits here and there, most of it was released in the early-to-mid 90’s, on labels like Kaos Records or Warning Inc.

Trance music made in Portugal during that period always felt a bit different from the best examples of the genre elsewhere; the scarcer studio resources made it simpler, more abstract and focused on the essential: the vibe . People like UR or myself never felt like these records needed to be buried deep, or the genre to become a dirty word. It was quite a big part of the portuguese Rave scene that influenced so many of us in a great way, and that needs to be celebrated.
