Puglia is a beautiful region, and it’s becoming more and more popular. The heel of the boot is still one of the crown jewels of Italy: the harsh beauty of the landscapes, the villages on the hillsides by the sea, or perched on hills, that omnipresent baroque art, a cuisine that is considered by many, as well as Italians, as one of the best in the country.

Gioia del Colle for its renowned wine Primitivo, a fruity native wine of Puglia, widely renowned in Italy and Europe.
After that you could go down to Mottola, home to byzantine rocky churches, place in gravinas, which are canyons excavated by erosion and former rivers, nowadays spread by Mediterranean bush and flora. From Mottola you can go to Castellaneta Marina or Ginosa Marina for a bath, it is only 30 minutes by car and great sandy beaches. May will be fine for swimming, trust me, if you are used to the Atlantic French beaches.
After that, heading back to Bari, you can go to Torre Guaceto, a lovely naturalistic reserve, or stop at Ostuni the so called ‘White city’ for its houses. Then you can try the local meat, everything in Ceglie Messapica at Fornello da Ricci, or in Cisternino is tasty too.

Then go to Lecce for its marvellous Baroque style, in the old town you can have pasticciotto the tipical dessert, similar to Neapolitan
