716 Playlists – Hartzine (Thibaut) Playlist

It’s been a while that I’ve been following Hartzine. Even if I don’t think in terms of nationalities when it comes to music, I’m always happy to see some active, innovative, curious, and enthusiastic French or French-speaking blogs. I proposed Thibault to make a playlist at the end of 2010 but he suggested he’d rather do one at the end of the 1st term of 2011. And it was the perfect moment cause he just had hosted Ela Orleans a few days in his house and so discovered lots of new bands or new tracks he was happy and impatient to share.
So here it is, the Hartzine Playlist on 716. Spring has come and we’re happy.

Cela fait un moment que je suis Hartzine et bien que je ne raisonne pas en termes de pays quand on en vient à la musique, cela me fait plaisir de voir de nombreux blogs français ou francophones, frais, innovants, curieux et enthousiastes. J’avais donc proposé à Thibault une playlist pour marquer la fin 2010 mais il m’avait proposé de plutôt faire une sélection à lafin du 1er trimestre 2011 comme un premier coup d’oeil dans le rétroviseur. Je suis donc revenu toquer à sa porte il y a peu et le moment fut parfait. En effet ayant hébergé Ela Orleans quelques jours, il a eu l’occasion de découvrir un tas de nouveaux artistes ou de nouveaux morceaux.

00) Phillip Seymour Hoffman – My Favortie Shirts Don’t Fit Anymore
Phillip Seymour Hoffman est le projet d’un homme, Noah Klein, par ailleurs tête pensante avec d’autres du projet FMLY, collectif artistique disposant d’une dizaine d’implantations à travers les États-Unis afin de promouvoir des artistes par le biais de sorties digitales et d’organisation d’évènements. Un lien d’amitié s’est créé par le biais d’une interview et d’une mixtape fait par le jeune homme pour Hartzine.

Phillip Seymour Hoffman is the project of one man, Noah Klein, who is also an active member of the FMLY project, an artistic collective that promotes artists accross the States with digital releases and events. A friendhsip link was created through of an interview I did with him and a mixtape he made for Hartzine.

01) Dan Melchior Und Das Menace – ’90s Man (Pt. 2)
Dan Melchior est un des songwriters garage les plus prolifiques de ces quinze dernières années avec pas loin de trente albums à son actif. Un son lo-fi incomparable, des mélodies foutraques et une personnalité attachante que l’on ne va tarder à retrouver en Europe, notamment à l’occasion du Primavera Sound à Barcelone.

Dan Melchior is one of the most prolific garage songwriters of the last 15 years with no less than 30 albums released. A unique lo-fi sound, crazy melodies and a charming personnality that you’ll be able to listen to soon in Europe, especially for the Primavera sound festival in Barcelona.

02) Jeans Wilder – Tough Guys
J’ai découvert la musique d’Andrew et son projet Jeans Wilder grâce à ce morceau sorti sur un split avec Best Coast sur Atelier Ciseaux. Il a débuté sa première tournée européenne, accompagné de son pote Peter à la basse, il y a moins d’un mois, ce qui fut l’occasion pour moi de mieux découvrir la gentillesse et la sensibilité de ce grand enfant qui n’a pas hésité à vendre sa voiture pour payer son billet d’avion. Sa musique est à son image, décontractée mais un brin mélancolique.

I discovered Andrew’s music and his Jeans Wilder project with this this track released on a split with Best Coast on Atelier Ciseaux. He started his european tour a month ago with his friend Peter on bass and it was for me the opportunity to discover how kind and sensible this big child is : he didn’t hesitate to sell his car to buy his plane ticket. His music looks like him : laid-back but a bit melancholic.

03) Dirty Beaches – Drunk Driving
Dirty Beaches est encore le groupe d’un seul, Alex Zhang Hungtai, avec qui je suis rentré en contact grâce à Ela Orleans. Lui aussi a une discographie foisonnante puisqu’en plus d’un split à paraître sur La Station Radar avec Ela Orleans et d’un album à paraître sur Zoo Music, Dirty Beaches apparaît en compagnie d’US Girl sur un split sortant ce mois-ci via Sibling Sex Records.

Once again Dirty Beaches is the band of one only musician, Alex Zhang Hungtai, with whom I got connected through Ela Orleans. He has a prolific discography : a split with Ela Orleans will be out soon on La Station Radar but an album is expected also on Zoo Music and he will appear this month with US Girl on a split on Sibling Sex Records.

04) US Girl – Red Ford Radio
US Girl justement et ce morceau extrait de Go Grey, sans aucun doute l’album le plus abouti de Meghan Remy, mis à part son EP Lunar Life de toute beauté. Quand l’expérimentation lo-fi incarne de sa poésie crasse un rêve américain éreinté de réalité.

The “Go Grey” album is probably the most accomplished record of Meghan Romy, exception made of the beautiful Lunar Life EP. When lo-fi experimentation paints a dirty poetic portrait of an american dream tired to have become so real.

05) John Maus – Old Town
John Maus s’apprête à donner une suite à son fabuleux Love Is Real paru il y a déjà deux ans. Et après écoute de Quantum Leap, single tiré de l’album à venir We Must Become The Pitiless Censors Of Ourselves, prévu le 27 juin prochain, un seul conseil : pressez-vous aux portes de la Flèche d’Or le 2 avril. Hartzine prépare sa venue, mais le secret doit encore tenir quelques jours.
John Maus is about release a new record after his fabulous Love Is Real published two years ago. After having listened to the first single “Quantum Leap” of the new album We Must Become The Pitiless Censors Of Ourselves, out the 27th of June, one advice : be ready to buy your tickets for the Flèche d’Or show the 2nd of April. Hartzine is preparing his venue but the secret must be kept a few days more.

06) Maria Minerva – Sad Serenade (Bedroom Rock ‘N’ Roll)
Maria Minerva est estonienne et a récemment intégré l’écurie Not Not Fun. Autant dire qu’après la cassette Tallin at Dawn dont est extrait ce morceau, son album qui sortira cet été, Cabaret Cixous, est très attendu.

Maria Minerva is from Estonia and she recently joined the Not Not Fun team. This track is from the Tallin At Dawn tape and we’re impatient to hear the album expected this summer, Cabaret Cixous.

07) Dark Day – Hands In The Dark
On m’a récemment révélé à la faveur d’une bouteille de whisky et d’une discussion charriant le petit matin l’existence de ce projet de Robin Crutchfield, Dark Day, par ailleurs membre du groupe post-punk DNA. Immédiatement j’en suis tombé amoureux de la même façon que Johnny Jewel et ses Chromatics, allant jusqu’à reprendre Hands In The Dark sous le titre Dark Day.

It’s around a bottle of whisky an early morning/late night discussion that I learned the existence of the Dark Day project by Robin Crutchfield who is also a member of the post-punk band DNA. I felt immediately in love with the music, same for Johnny Jewel et ses Chromatics who did a cover of the Hands in the Dark song under the name Dark Day.

08) Slim Twig – Gate Hearing!
Slim Twig ou Max Turnbull. Voilà encore une belle rencontre en préparation, là encore par l’entremise d’Ela Orleans. Ce morceau de ce très jeune garçon, à la discographie déjà longue comme un bras, s’est inscrit instantanément au plus profond de ma mémoire. Il n’est pas prêt de s’effacer.

Slim Twig or Max Turnbull. This is once again a future nice meeting, still through Ela Orleans. This track, made by a very young artists who has already a big discography, has been directly graved into my memory and won’t be erased soon.

09) Ela Orleans – I Know
J’ai reçu Ela Orleans chez moi pour quelques jours à l’occasion d’un concert qu’Hartzine à monté le 7 mars en (bonne) compagnie de Backyard Vacation et surtout La Station Radar, sans qui rien n’aurait été possible. I Know est l’histoire d’un coup de coeur intégral. S’il m’est impossible d’admirer mes amis, je dois admettre faire une exception pour elle. J’ai déjà eu l’occasion de dire tout le bien que pensais d’elle lors de la présentation de son interview pour Hartzine, j’en aurai encore l’occasion puisqu’en plus du split sus-mentionné avec Dirty Beaches, la New-Yorkaise d’adoption prépare pas moins de trois albums respectivement sur La Station Radar, Night People et Clan Destine Records.

I have hosted Ela Orleans for a few days when she came for a show organized by Hartzine the 7th of March with Backyard Vacation and La Station Radar without whom nothing would have been possible. I Know is the story of a love at first sight. If it’s impossible for me to admire my friends, I have to admit I made an exception for her. I already had the opportunity to say all the good I think of her when I published her interview in Hartzine. I’ll continue to do so because in addition to the Spli EP with Dirty Beaches, the New York girl is preparing 3 albums respectively on La Station Radar, Night People et Clan Destine Records.

10) Terror Bird – Dream For Your Bathwater
Terror Bird est un duo canadien composé d’un couple indéfectible puisque marié, Nikki Nevver à la voix et aux claviers et Jeremiah Haywood à la batterie. Egalement présent lors de ce concert du 7 mars dernier, je reste ensorcelé par cette voix ici tout aussi enveloppante que sur le maxi Shadows In The Hall. Bien que ne reposant sur peu de choses, leur dernier album, Human Culture, paru sur Night People, est d’une justesse époustouflante.

Terror Bird is a canadian duo composed of an indefectible couple because they’re married, Nikki Nevver on vocals and keyboards and Jeremiah Haywood on drums. I was at their show in Paris the 7th of March and remain bewitched by her overwhelming voice, like on their Shadow In The Hall 12”. Their last album, Human Culture, is quite minimal but sounds perfectly right.

11) Jef Barbara – Cocaine Love
Jef Barbara est l’occasion pour moi de toucher un mot d’Amdiscs, label iconoclaste s’il en est, au catalogue aussi dense que varié. Jef Barbara, québécois mariant glam, homosexualité et folie synthétique, notamment sur son dernier opus, Contamination, livre ici le prémisse d’une folle soirée à venir en août sur Paris où Hartzine recevra ses amis d’Amdiscs, bien accompagné de Jef Barbara donc, en plus de Dream Boat et CVLTS.

Jef Barbara gives me the opportunity to speak about Amdiscs, an iconoclast record label with a dense and eclectic catalogue. Jef Barbara comes from Quebec and mixes glam, homosexuality and synthetic madness, especially on his last record Contamination. You can get an idea of the party which Hartzine will organize in Paris with Amdiscs alongside with Jef Barbara, Dream Boat and CVLTS.
